What are the kinds of fish I will catch with Captain Cleve?  And when are the best times for fishing?

Inshore Fishing (around the outskirts of the USVI and BVI):  Captain Cleve specializes in catching yellowtail snappers, bonitos, barracudas, blue runners (locally known as hardnose), triggerfish, red hinds and all various types of Jacks.  Each type of fish can be caught year-round.  In terms of blue runners and yellowtails, the best time for fishing is all year-round, including two days before and two days after a full moon.  The day of a full moon is also best for fishing.

Offshore Fishing (deep sea fishing):  Captain Cleve can help you catch sailfish, marlins, wahoos, tunas and dolphins (also known as mahi mahi).  Fishing for dolphins should not be confused with the dolphins that are marine mammals related to porpoises.  The best time to fish for sailfish and marlins is during the summer months.  Wahoo is best caught between September and November.  Tunas are caught year-round and just before sunset.  And dolphins are best caught between March and June.

How many pounds of fish go to the customer?  And do you clean and filet the fish?

Customers can receive up to 15 pounds of fish.  Captain Cleve also provides the service of cleaning and filleting the fish.

Are there any fishing restrictions?

Because of restrictions set forth by law, Captain Cleve will neither fish for groupers nor in the Virgin Islands National Park.  Also, all billfish will be released after being caught.

Places to go for snorkeling and what are the approximate travel times?

Places you can go for snorkeling include Lovango and Congo, which is about 10 minutes from the departure dock in St. John.  The Caves, Indians, Sandyspit, Newfound Bay are also incredible snorkeling sites, which are about 25 minutes from the departure dock.

Places to eat/drink, their specialties and what are the approximate travel times?

Some of the best places to eat include Foxy’s, which is known for its West Indain roti.  Foxy’s West Indian roti consists of a tortilla wrap with your choice of one filling, which include lobster, chicken, shrimp or vegetables.  The roti also has mild curried potatoes and Caribbean seasonings.

Foxy’s Taboo is another great spot that specializes in big, scrumptious burgers (with mango chutney sauce) and pizzas.

Captain Cleve’s favorite spot is Sidney’s Peace and Love.  Sidney’s Peace and Love has fresh local lobster and fish on the menu.  You can also pick your choice of lobster before it cooks.  You can be your own bartender for the day by mixing your own drinks.  This outdoor restaurant is one of the only places Captain Cleve can dock right up into the dining area.

Although there are many other restaurants available in the British Virgin Islands, the ones previously mentioned are Captain Cleve’s favorites.  Each restaurant is about 25 minutes from the departure dock.

Where are the Customs check-in points and approximately how much are the fees?

There are three check-in points in the British Virgin Islands:

  • Great Harbour in Jost Van Dyke
  • Soper’s Hole in Tortola
  • Spanish Town in Virgin Gorda

Check-in fees are approximately $20.00 (USD) per person.  The U.S. Customs on St. John also requires a returning fee of approximately $20.00 - $25.00 (USD) per boat (varies on holidays).

How much is the fuel cost?

Fuel cost depends on the amount of fuel used for the trip by the current rate per gallon.  For example, a typical boat trip uses about 20 – 45 gallons of fuel and IF the rate of fuel is $3.20 (USD) per gallon, then your fuel bill will cost between $64.00 - $144.00 (USD).

What are your payment methods and cancellation policy?

Cash and travelers checks are accepted.  At this time, all major credit and debit cards will not be accepted.  Cancellation must be done 24 hours prior to the trip.
